Way back in 1979, a miniseries based on Salem's Lot first introduced television viewers to an adapted work of Stephen King. Thirty five years on, Hulu has announced the 36th (and counting) small-screen chapter in the ever-expanding universe of King, commissioning an adaptation of the time-travelling 11/22/63.

Set to be produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, the best selling sci-fi crime thriller sees high school teacher Jake Epping travel back in time in an attempt to prevent the murder of John F. Kennedy. A twisting piece of historical fiction, King himself believes it's the perfect work for longform, event TV programming.

Bridget Carpenter (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood) is on board to adapt a script for the nine-hour online series, with Abrams likely to have a hand in proceedings, commenting that he's been a fan of King's work since junior high school. "The chance to work with him at all, let alone on a story so compelling, emotional and imaginative, is a dream," said the director.

A production of Warner Bros. Television, it's yet to be announced who will snap up the series for screening in the UK, or when the show will arrive on Hulu for the US release. Here's hoping the series has better luck than Jonathan Demme's ill-fated film adaptation that never was.
