We’ve all dreamed of owning a pub at some point, right? Whether it’s a small London drinker’s pub or a trendy gastropub, the pull of being a publican is a strong one.
If this is feeling relatable in the slightest, you may be in luck as one Irish landlord is looking for his successor. And this isn’t just your average pub, but a gorgeous family-run pub on the rural Achill Island situated on the beautiful landscape of West Ireland.
The only catch? Your surname has to be McLoughlin.
Joseph ‘Josie’ McLoughlin owns McLoughlin’s Bar - a pub that has been in his family for four generations. And here’s a bit of (quite literal) pub quiz trivia for you; back in the day Irish pubs legally had to be named after their proprietor - hence McLoughlin’s (and O’Donoghue, Fitzpatrick etcetera). Now hitting retirement age, and with his family living across the world, Josie has no-one to pass McLoughlin’s pub on to.
Enter Heineken…
Heineken has stepped in to help the McLoughlin’s keep tradition alive and the pub in family hands. Together, they have launched a global recruitment campaign with ads going live across all four corners of the world - including New York, Sydney, and Vietnam - all in a bid to find the next McLoughlin. And, they are even offering a succession package to help the “new McLoughlin” get their feet behind the bar.
It’s fair to say they are pretty confident they’ll find someone, as with 88 million Irish descendants living across the globe, all it takes is just one McLoughlin that wants to reconnect with their roots by owning a pub that bears their namesake.
So, all you have to do is have the surname McLoughlin, and be willing to relocate to West Ireland, aka. the backdrop for hit-film The Banshees of Inisherin. Easy. Although, it’s not exactly a hardship when from the pub’s doorstep, the views stretch out across the sea and up towards Slievemore mountain, offering incredible sunsets on the regs.
This is part of Heineken’s wider campaign - For the Love of Pubs - helping to keep pub-culture (and craic) alive.
