The 15 Coolest Trainers of 2014

The 15 Coolest Trainers of 2014

2014 has seen a lot of mad trainers. There have been Batman ones, Hunger Games onesones that come pre-muddied, and even knitted ones.

But which were the best shoes that money, and a bloody-minded determination to buy them first over the internet, could buy this year?

Take a look at our definitive gallery...

The Asics Gel Exploration Tech Pack

What is it?: A rugged, resilient and classic-looking sneaker that can deal with the rigours of everyday wear. There are two pairs to choose from: Gel Lyte and Gel Saga.

Where can I get it?

What's the damage?: £95.00

Adidas Stan Smith Vulcs

What are they?: An out-and-out classic trainer, with a couple of fresh design tweaks. The Vulcs have an extra-grippy outsole - perfect for urban pursuits. Or, if you're not into skateboarding, they'll just help keep you upright.

Where can I get them?

What's the damage?: £60.00

The Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG

What are they?: A winter-proof, retro-styled hi-top, stylishly modelled in all black.

Where can I get them?: These went on sale on 6 December and almost immediately sold out. There are a few pairs floating about on eBay though.

What's the damage?: £120+

The Onitsuka Mexico 66

What are they?: Onitsuka launched a limited edition range of World Cup-inspired trainers just prior to this year's tournament in Brazil. The classic Mexico 66s were briefly available in two new colourways, based on the Brazilian flag.

Reebok x Caliroots ALL OUT DUBSTEP

What are they?: A collaboration between Reebok, online sneaker store Caliroots, and their mates ALL OUT DUBSTEP (alright lads, no need to shout). These trainers take the classic Reebok lines and toughen up the materials for a more hard-wearing shoe. They come with a free USB of music, too.

Where can I get them?

What's the damage?: £85.

The Puma And McQ Collaboration

What are they?: Puma renewed its collaboration with Alexander McQueen this autumn, producing a whole range of high fashion trainers to choose from.

Where can I get them?: Try the McQueen website.

What's the damage?: You're looking around the £200 mark.

The Catch-22 New Balance Trainers

What are they?: Not just any New Balance, these Made In USA 1400s are inspired by Joseph Heller's classic novel, Catch-22.

Where can I get them?: Try

What's the damage?: £149.

The Nike Air Tailwind

What are they?: Quite simply, these are the original Nike Airs. The Tailwind was designed for runners of the Honolulu Marathon in 1978, and was the first shoe to employ Nike's revolutionary air pocket technology.

Where can I get them?: Try, or Size?.

What's the damage?: £70.

The Missions

What are they?: Madrid-based company Android Homme launched (sorry) these trainers on the 45th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The Missions, as they're called, are as close as is practical to the original boots worn by the crew.

Where can I get them?: Of course, they sold out immediately. We've found a pair on eBay, though. Shame they're $999.99...

What's the damage?: £110. (For the complete look, why not pair them with this?)

Reebok GL6000

What are they?: Another stonewall classic revitalised for 2014. This collection reboots the original 1985 release with six smart new colourways.

Where can I get them?

What's the damage?: £65.

What's the damage?: £265 (RRP).

Nike Air Yeezy 2

What are they?: The second collaboration between Kanye West and Nike, the Air Yeezy 2s were the most highly-anticipated trainers of recent years. Admittedly, their stylings aren't to everyone's taste.
