Surprisingly affordable for a 12-year-old scotch, Aberlour has aged this in both traditional oak and sherry casks. It pours a deep amber and has a rich oaky flavour, but the sherry casks provide a fruity - we get a lot of plum and dark, stoned fruit notes - and a spicy element. It’s like Christmas cake distilled into a whisky, making it great for winter warmers and toddies by the fireplace come the winter months.
We have a soft spot for The Singleton - it's much lighter and more mellow than a lot of whiskies, with notes of honey and vanilla. It’s buttery smooth and balanced, with a nutty undertone. Aged in Oloroso casks and ex-bourbon casks, the whisky is creamy and rich, with notes of apple and espresso on the palate. And for under £30, it’s definitely worth adding to your wish list.
One of the most popular gins around, Plymouth is a decent spirit for you G&T or gimlet, if you want to be a little more fancy. Either way, this will deliver the herbaceous botanicals you'll be seeking out with a smooth finish. Just remember to add some tonic to your cart too.
This is a really complex gin that is our favourite for making martinis with - there's a robustness with this one that we love, and also a depth to its flavour that will really spice up your evening tipple. It's the bartender's gin-of-choice and a sophisticated level up from most things in your cupboard. Once you have it, it will be hard to go back to normal Tanqueray...
Don Julio is a well recognised name across the tequila world, essentially the grandfather of non-shot-consumed-actually-sippable tequila. The Añejo tequila is a level up from your standard Blanco, with a more rounded taste and smoother finish. Whether you want to sip it straight or if you're looking for something to make into delicious, stripped back cocktails, Don Julio Añejo is a great staple that will elevate your evenings.

As Content Director of Shortlist, Marc likes nothing more than to compile endless lists of an evening by candlelight. He started out life as a movie writer for numerous (now defunct) magazines and soon found himself online - editing a gaggle of gadget sites, including TechRadar, Digital Camera World and Tom's Guide UK. At Shortlist you'll find him mostly writing about movies and tech, so no change there then.
