Netflix won't be renewing Messiah for a second season
It's time to wave goodbye to the controversial series
Netflix has been plugging a host of new shows recently in the hope we’ll latch on and embrace our binge-watching tendencies. None more so than Netflix Original Messiah.
Now though, the platform has announced that the show will not be renewed for a second season.
Taking to Instagram, actor Wil Traval announced the news in a post with an image alongside his co-star Michelle Monoghan.
“I have just received news from Netflix that there will be no season 2 of #messiah” he posted. “I wanted to say to all the fans thank you for your support and love. I wish things were different.”
Depicting the overlap of religion and politics, the controversial series was created by Michael Petroni and produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.
Telling the tale of a CIA officer who begins to investigate a man causing global disruption, known to many as Al-Masih (played by Mehdi Dehbi), the show faced a number of airing issues in certain parts of the world.
Two days before Messiah was set to hit Netflix across the world, The Royal Film Commission of Jordan made a formal objection to the airing of the drama in their country -a predominantly Muslim state.
On the plus side, that leaves more budget to channel into original programming - can we start a campaign to bring back The OA, anyone?
