"Could have brewed my own in this time", is our go-to line on a Friday night at our local, as we attempt to break the tension caused by us elbowing our way to the front of the bar.
Our claim has become unwittingly accurate thanks to a new Kickstarter project for the PicoBrew Zymatic. No, it's not a boozy new Pokémon, it's a home brewing machine that takes the hassle and hours out of traditional home-made efforts.
Brothers Bill and Jim Mitchell were avoid home-brewers, but dreamt of being able to brew a beer as easily as they could make an espresso or loaf of bread. After three years of tinkering and gallons of bad beer, they've created a machine that's got home and commercial brewers alike very excited.
The Picobrew Zymatic looks like an oversized microwave. Brewers remove a large plastic box from its front and insert the three required ingredients: malted grain, water and hops. They then select a recipe from the machine, which controls very specific temperatures for the brewing process, and leave it to work for some three and a half hours.
When it's done, they'll have produced a keg of their very own beer - though it still needs to be chilled, have yeast added and allowed to ferment for up to a week. So it's still quicker to fight your way to the front of a busy bar.
You can find out more about the Picobrew Zymatic on their Kickstarter page and by checking out their pitch video below.
