Vinyl is the comeback kid of the 21st century, doing the seemingly impossible revival, joining the ranks of jorts, and every film that was popular in the 00s. To celebrate the beauty of vinyl and keep folks actually buying records rather than browsing amongst them for an artsy picture on the ‘Gram, London's Old Street Records has come up with a unique rewards strategy.
To celebrate Record Store Day on 18th April, Old St Records in Shoreditch is giving away free drinks – but there’s a catch. In order to redeem your free drink (of your choice), you’ll need to show a same-day receipt from a record store, showing a purchase. The idea is to celebrate independent record stores, and vinyl-music culture. And if the name Old St Records sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve queued outside and danced your way in to one of their other London locations like Venn St Records, Northcote Records, or Eastcheap Records.
Kicking off at Old St Records on 18th, it’s not just a free drink but a proper all-day party celebrating rubber records and its cult indie scene. A stacked lineup of DJs will be spinning vinyls from early afternoon until 2am, with 2-for-1 cocktails, and plenty of party energy.
Kicking off at 3pm, DJ Carly Foxx is up first with a set of feel-good disco tunes, before DJ Matman takes over, brining the funk, hip-hop, and R&B. Next up is DJ Dan Grey with dance classics, followed by DJ P who will be spinning some 90s and 00s anthems – sort of like a calling card to East Londoners who remember the days of Liberty X and S Club 7, and primary school discos with the Macarena and glow stick bracelets.
Behind the bar, the 2-4-1 cocktails will be on offer from 5pm until 8pm, including an Elderflower Fizz, Tommy’s Margarita, and a Tulum Negroni, but the bar will be stacked with all the terrific tipples you could want.
Over 300 independent record stores take part in the day, and all you’ll need to do is have a valid receipt from one of them from 18th April to get your hands on a free drink. And if you have more restraint than the rest of vis a vis impulse music purchases, then you can still head on down and join the party at Old St Records. You can find the full list of participating venues at Record Store Day UK’s website.
