Sci-fi fans are really having a great time of things at the moment.

Hot on the heels of the release of Christopher Nolan's epic Interstellar movie comes the news that Ridley Scott is to direct a TV miniseries of 3001: The Final Odyssey.

It will be based on the 1997 book of the same name by Arthur C. Clarke; which was the fourth and final part in his Space Odyssey series; 2001: A Space Odyssey being the first. Syfy is behind the series with Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Carribean/Collateral) in as screenwriter and executive producer alongside Scott and David W. Zucker (The Good Wife, Numbers).

It begins with Dr. Frank Poole being reawoken after 1000 years of deep freeze and returned to a hugely changed Earth. Meanwhile, humans have coloned Ganymede and Callisto, while TMA-1, the black monolith discovered on the Moon, has been brought to earth.

Excitingly, the project has the full support of both Kubrick's estate (Kubrick, of course, directed the original film) - and Clarke. It's slated to hit screens in 2015 and essentially, it sounds like if you love sci-fi and space, you're going to love this.
