A Pro's Guide To Picking Wine

A Pro's Guide To Picking Wine

27 October 2014

"Always pick the second most expensive bottle" said a man, hoping to convince the world he knew how to blag his way through a date in a nice restaurant. Thankfully for you, that man doesn't work for ShortList.com. He got a better offer, or something...

We won't pretend to give you an expert guide to picking wines. Firstly, because we aren't experts (though we do know that some sommeliers who have had to argue for the cheapest bottle to be included on the menu, because it's better than many of the mid-priced options), and secondly, because the team at Vino Lovers has already done a fine job of creating one for you.

From simple advice on how best to pair a bottle with your chosen meal, to a handy cheat sheet on the right questions to ask (we've already filed away "What's drinking well" for use at the Christmas party), this guide serves as an excellent starting point for dipping a toe into the heady world of wine. And if you forget it all under the pressurised gaze of the waiter, just ask your date what they'd prefer.
