The subject of slavery has been strangely absent from the big screen in the past few years but after Django Unchained and Lincoln both nabbed Oscars earlier this year, it seems to be deservedly back in the limelight.
Following in their footsteps is Steve McQueen, the acclaimed director of Hunger and Shame, who has assembled a rather incredible cast for his latest film which focuses on the true story of a free man turned slave called Solomon Northup.
The trailer for 12 Years A Slave has just dropped and it's undeniably stirring stuff. Chiwetel Ejiofor takes on the lead role of a man trying to regain his freedom while support comes from Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch and Paul Giamatti.
We smell Oscars all over this one.
