The Netflix show now has a release date, a new trailer and a lot more

There are going to be some changes as 13 Reasons Why prepares for its second season.

The controversial Netflix show, which deals with themes around self-harm and mental health, has already announced plans to provide viewers affected by the show’s issues with the support they need.

Netflix have repeated this in their announcement about the new series, which now has an official release date of May 18, plus a new official trailer.

The second season of 13 Reasons Why picks up after the lead characters have learned the truth about the death of their friend and classmate Hannah, with the first season’s cassettes giving way to a series of polaroids as the main focus.

As described by Netflix, these polaroids, featured prominently in the trailer, “lead Clay [Dylan Minnette] and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up”.

The show will return on 18 May, with another run of 13 one-hour episodes, but that’s not the only new announcement from the streaming service.

Netflix has updated the 13ReasonsWhy.info micro-site, which already included specific mental health support information tailored to the specific countries in which the show is available to watch.

Among the new additions is an updated discussion guide, which provides background information about the show, as well as advice and tips for anyone planning on watching or rewatching the first season before the show returns.

In addition to contact details for organisations such as The Samaritans and Childline in the UK (and comparable services for viewers overseas), the discussion guide offers links for those affected by depression, anxiety, drug or alcohol use, bullying and sexual assault.

It also includes links relating to suicide prevention, and specific help for those who have lost someone to suicide.
