The DC Universe was (re) kickstarted with a crowd-pleasing bang last summer thanks to James Gunn’s Superman starring David Corenswet. Now, the super franchise is back, with something a little more punky but just as exciting. Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl starring Millie Alcock is set to become the second major addition to the growing - and beloved - franchise. The teaser trailer from a couple of months ago shared a glimpse at Alcock's chaotic, party-girl Supergirl / Kara Zor-El, and the latest trailer is just getting fans even more excited for more action. Here are five things we spotted in the new trailer.

1. We’re getting a more alternative punky protagonist

Milly Alcock’s Supergirl has already had a quick cameo at the end of 2025’s Superman, debuting a more party-girl Supergirl / Kara Zor-El, and if the trailer is anything to go by she’s just as offbeat in her own film.

Women are complex creatures, varied and encompassing multitudes. In real life, that is – in films, they tend to fall into three main categories: the wife, the bad time party-girl, and the good time party girl / manic pixie dream girl. So, it’s fairly refreshing to see a character - and a superhero at that - not have the simple perfection and hero complex that pervades a lot of the genre. She’s essentially an anti-hero and the creatives behind the film haven’t shied away from her past.

2. This anti-hero nature is deliberate

Speaking of the anti-hero nature of DC’s latest protagonist, this is definitely a deliberate choice from the writer and director. Speaking at a preview party for the first Supergirl trailer in December, The Hollywood Reporter recorded that Gillespie told the crowd “This is really an anti-hero story. She’s got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life.” With Gunn adding that “So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all. Like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while.”

3. She ain’t chasing after a man, the pooch takes priority

In what is possibly the most realistic storyline yet, Supergirl isn’t a heartbroken, lost in love damsel, chasing after her man after a kidnapping, but instead going full baddie-on-revenge-turn after her beloved dog is poisoned. Clearly, Gillespie and Nogueira heard the bros before hoes memo, and possibly looked at the women in their lives and realised to immortalise the “men come and go but a best friend is for life” motto in film form.

4. Jason Momoa is taking on a big old role

Other than the Supergirl and Krypto, the other leading role is Lobo, the unlikely companion Supergirl teams up with on her interstellar rescue mission. Taking on the role of Lobo is none other than Jason Momoa who is no stranger to an action movie – or DC for that matter, having taken on the role of DC’s Aquaman back in 2018 (and later in 2023 too).

Lobo is an alien from the planet Czarnia and works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. He got his own comic in the early 1990s and he’s firmly taking centre stage in Supergirl. We see the two meet in an intergalactic dive bar, and subsequently in the middle of the fight, where Lobo (Momoa) asks Zor-El “aren’t you that ditz from the dive bar?” with her quickly responding, “Funny, that’s what I’ve been calling you.” So it looks like the unlikely pair will have some pretty good patter to underscore the action-packed antics.

5. Superman is making a cameo

Our first glimpse of Alcock’s (fantastic) Supergirl came in Gunn’s Superman reboot towards the end of the film, when a drunken Kara swings by (okay, crash lands) to pick up her dog from her cousins with a casual "thanks for watching him, bitch” aimed at her cousin as she leaves. It seems only fair that Superman returns the favour and pops up in Supergirl’s feature film.

In the beginning of the trailer, we see Coronswet’s Superman speaking from a recorded message, saying: “I was just touching base to see when you think you might be coming back. You know, I’m just worried that you’re not gonna find your stride here if you keep going off-world all the time, Kara. I’m worried you’re not gonna find your people,” She responds: “Yeah, well, that’s the thing, Clark. I have no people.”

Whether he turns up again in the rest of the film we don’t yet know, but it’s always nice to see the family showing up for one another.
