Idris Elba looks menacing in the explosive new trailer for Star Trek Beyond

Trekkies the world over were sent into warp last week when CBS revealed the first teaser for its new Star Trek TV series - hinting at new heroes, new villains, and... well, not a whole lot else.

With our appetites agonisingly whetted, Justin Lin has provided some much needed space sustenance with an extended look at his new Trek film, Beyond - and boy does it deliver.

Beyond sees James T Kirk (Chris Pine) grapple with some paternal baggage, eventually returning to the depths of space with the Enterprise crew, to explore the furthest reaches of uncharted space. As is their habit, they encounter a mysterious new enemy (Idris Elba in a heck of a lot of makeup as Krall) who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.

Aliens, spaceships, stuff blowing up - we're beyond excited.

Star Trek: Beyond arrives in cinemas on 22 July.
