TFL just unveiled a brand new merch line celebrating the designs of the Piccadilly line
The collab you never saw coming
There are many things that likely flit through your mind as you descend onto one of London’s tubes: wow, what a feat of engineering, how did they manage to build all those ancient tunnels when they didn’t have all that modern equipment? And maybe a lesser thought one, wow these moquettes are really trendy. To be fair, some of the designs on said seats are so faded that you may not notice how intricate it is – that, or you happen to be one of the unlucky ones who gets on a stop which always seems to have a slew of entirely full carriages (we’re looking at you, Clapham South). Thanks to TFL’s new merch drop, you could be admiring the tube’s artwork from your own accessories.
To mark the 120th anniversary of the Piccadilly line, TFL has teamed up with whimsical accessories brand Signare to launch a new collection which will be a touch of erm, tube chic to your everyday. The new range includes rucksacks, card holders, purses, bags, and make up bags all celebrating the iconic designs of the navy blue line. Suddenly, tube themed birthday parties with mandatory dressing up just got a lot easier to do.
Luckily, the swag hasn’t been made from actual seat coverings, leaving some rather threadbare spots during rush hour. Instead, the range has replicated the design from the seat upholstery, using woven material, bringing the Piccadilly line’s designs to life. Each design features some of the most recognisable tube elements like the Mind the Gap phrase, the round tube station symbol, and the TFL colour palette.
It's not a cheap collection, with the small rucksack retailing at £60, a small round zip purse around £20, and the Barman Moquette Tote Bag also at £60.
Does it feel like something Emily in Paris might come up with? Yes. Is the project is a genuine activation? Also yes. Maybe it's just trying to help fill the Piccadilly shaped gap in your life, as the trains have been undergoing works since 2018, and are set to finish next summer. For those of you doing the maths, yes that does mean you could be wearing matching garms to twin with the reopened trains. Chic doesn't even begin to cover it.
The range will be available to buy across London in select retailers including:
- Tower Bridge Gift Shop – Tower Bridge, London SE1 2UP
- London Transport Museum Shop – Covent Garden, London WC2E 7BB
- Medici Gallery – South Kensington, London SW7 2LT
- Giftbox Britain – Whitehall, London SW1A 2BX
- Cool Britannia – Buckingham Palace Road, London SW1W 0PP
- Cool Britannia – Portobello Road, London W11 2DZ
