Clerks was a hugely successful movie which belied its tiny budget of $27.575 to become a slow-burning hit, grossing in excess of $3m - a 10,000% return on the original investment.
The story of how the film came to be created is almost as entertaining as the movie itself, with first-time director Kevin Smith selling his comic book collection, maxing out credit cards and spending an insurance payout on making the film - which was shot in black and white to save money. If that wasn't enough, he was staff member in the shop in which the film was set, working during the day and then filming at night, for 21 days straight.
Despite all this, the film went on to become a cult classic, and the first of Smith's Askewniverse films, which would later feature Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma amongst others.
