The Shawshank Redemption In 8-bit

Ah, The Shawshank Redemption. That ubiquitous 1994 prison drama cited as a favourite movie by everyone from world leaders to Premier League footballers.

But don’t hold that against it. Based on the Stephen King story, Frank Darabont’s film takes up DVD shelf space the world over for good reason: it’s an universally appealing story, brimming with memorable characters, gripping scenes and interracial bromance.

And here comes Cinefix’s 8-bit take on proceedings, throwing Tim Robbins’ foppish inmate Andy and Morgan Freeman’s wily jailbird Red into the 8-bit (which is really 16-bit) prison rife with male rape and bloody beat downs by the guards.

Okay, so maybe there’s a good reason a retro game was never released. Essential viewing nonetheless.
