In the two decades since The Big Lebowski was released, it has shown no signs of disappearing into the background of our collective consciousness.
John Goodman still has famous lines from the 1998 film quoted back at him, and he wasn’t even top billing on the posters.
That honour went to Jeff Bridges, who played The Dude in the Coen Brothers’ film, and Bridges is reprising the character for… well, we’re not sure about that part yet.
Bridges shared a video on Twitter in which he is back in character, with that recognisable haircut and cardigan, with the caption ‘Can’t be living in the past, man. Stay tuned.’
At the end of the clip, we see the date ‘2.3.19’ – February third, based on the American system of writing dates, hinting that we’ll be treated to something Lebowski-related at that point. But what?
Naturally, there has already been a great deal of speculation, and we’ve got a few ideas of our own.
As many have pointed out, the date cited is the date of this year’s Super Bowl, suggesting Bridges might have simply signed up to play The Dude in a big-budget advert.
After all, ads during the big game get the maximum number of eyeballs on them, meaning brands tend to go all out. Could he be shilling grooming products? Rugs? Perhaps a pre-mixed White Russian.
There’s also a Big Lebowski spin-off on the way – the Jesus Quintana-focused Going Places – so maybe he’s teasing a cameo in that film.
Of course, we can always hope for the best, and who knows, perhaps there will be another big screen appearance for Bridges’ character in a fully-fledged sequel to the original. Is that necessarily a good idea? Not for us to say.
