Disney announces Han Solo origin film

"Ches ko ba tuta creesta crenko ya kolska!"

You mean you can't speak Huttese? Then you probably won't be as excited as we are at the news that Han Solo is going, aptly, solo.

Disney has announced that the beloved space smuggler is set to star in his own origins film, joining Rogue One as another Star Wars spin-off title. Direction will be lent by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, the sponsored_longform behind The Lego Movie, and The Hollywood Reporter has word that father and son team Lawrence Kasadan (writer of both Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi screenplays) and Jon Kasdan will pen the script.

Word on casting is yet to be announced, but expect rumours to start flying faster than a smuggling run in the coming year, with a release date set for an ambitious 25 May 2018.

So what could the origin story cover? We've attempted to use our limited Force skills (and a bunch of fan forums discussing non-official prequel fiction) to pull out some of the possible plot points.

His relationship with Chewie

Expect to see some mention of the events that forged the firm friendship between Han and his Wookiee companion Chewbacca. There's a bunch of fan fiction covering the origins of this sponsored_longform: Han will save Chewie from a near-certain death, with Chewie swearing a life-debt in return. There might even be a love-hate relationship that the duo overcome in suitably comical fashion.

His deal with Jabba

One of the few moments of exposition for Han's backstory from the original films involves the vested rogue owing money to Jabba the Hutt - a sum so vast that the crime lord sends out a troop of bounty hunters to collect Han, dead or alive. But what was the money for? A smuggling operation gone amiss? Payment for a delivery Han never returned? A dry cleaning bill with extortionate interest? Expect to find out.

His friendship with Lando Calrissian

This has to come up. Lando and Han were both smugglers in a former life, before Lando changed his ways to become the administrator of Cloud City. The original owner of the Millennium Falcon, we'd bet our Star Wars Lego collection (it's vast) on Lando featuring heavily in Han's origin story. Expect friendship, betrayal and inexcusable womanising.

His first run in the Millennium Flacon

A line in Empire Strikes Back hints that Han Solo won the slippery-quick Falcon in a bet with Lando Calrissian - a former smuggler with a long, complicated back story (see above). Han famously quips that the ship can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs (which makes no sense, as Parsecs is a unit of distance, but that's a talk for another day). Will we find out what the Kessel Run is? Possibly. Will the Millennium Falcon star in the origin film and inevitably get Han out of a sticky situation? Definitely.
