We're going to be bold: films will never, ever be a patch on the power of the imagination filtered through the pages of a book.

Unless you've got a huge production budget to splash all over it (Jurassic Park). Or if the written narrative is a bit sluggish and could benefit from slimming down (The Social Network). Or if... right, we're retracting our statement.

The bookish types of LoveReading.co.uk have done away with heated debates by applying logic to this age old question (initially asked when Sherlock Holmes Baffled became the first 'film of the book' in 1900) by comparing the aggregated critical scores of books and their film versions.

The following list contains some surprising victories, some glaring omissions, but more importantly, more fuel to stoke the high-brow argumentative fires with.
