Does anyone know a really old projectionist who died recently?
Because as their life flashed before their eyes, they probably witnessed something not a million miles away from this glorious cinematic supercut, condensing 120 years of cinema to a seven minute video.
That’s right, one hundred and twenty years (we thought spelling it out would emphasise just how shocked we are), crammed with sweeping epics, from the early Hollywood days and grainy European efforts before film really took off, to the CGI-dripping blockbusters we queue up for today.
Compiled by Joris Faucon Grimaud, it doesn't necessarily chart it by age or year either: Westerns, animated classics and war films are banded together as genres, while some of the picks may even surprise you.
Quite where we’ll be watching movies in another 120 years is anyone’s guess. The moon, most likely. Projected straight onto our eyeballs.
