The first season of American Crime Story was addicting, captivating television. The fast-paced drama The People v. O. J. Simpson reminded us why the whole world was so completely obsessed with the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman and the ensuing ‘Trial of the Century’.
Last year, the programme won nine Emmys, more than any other show, including Outstanding Limited Series. (Personally I thought it was so good I’ve watched the whole thing from start to finish twice).
And now the first full-length official trailer for the next season has been released:
Called The Assassination of Gianni Versace, it tells the story of the murder of the world-famous fashion designer in the summer of 1997.
The cast includes Edgar Ramírez as Gianni Versace, Penelope Cruz as his sister Donatella Versace, Darren Criss as serial killer Andrew Cunanan and Ricky Martin as Versace’s long-time partner Antonio D’Amico.
Ramírez, who shared the trailer on Twitter and Instagram, said: “Indescribably honored to have portrayed this remarkable man and be part of such a culturally and socially relevant project. I have had the privilege to work with heroes of mine who are now my close friends and with some of the most talented people I have ever met. Eternally grateful to all of them.”
In the new trailer, we see Criss running away from the scene of the murder as Versace lays in his distraught partner’s arms. The trailer, filled with sex, violence and blood, also sees Criss brutally suffocating a sexual partner by wrapping his head in duct tape.
Show creator Ryan Murphy, who’s also responsible for American Horror Story and Feud, discussed the upcoming season earlier this year: “We really get to examine the victims. In many ways, we’re trying to bring to life and celebrate those people that Andrew Cunanan snuffed out.”
He added to E!: “I think it’s more than why he was killed, it’s sort of why it was allowed to happen. We’re trying to talk about a crime within a social idea…Versace, who was the last victim, really did not have to die.”
The Assassination of Gianni Versace is set to be released on 17 January next year on FX in the US and soon after on BBC2 and Netflix in the UK.
The second season of the show was originally supposed to focus on Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath - with Sarah Paulson in the lead role - but this has now been moved back to Season 3. Season 4, which has already been confirmed, will follow Bill Clinton’s sex scandal with Monica Lewinsky.
