It’s the fight everyone’s talking about – and it’s moved a step closer with the news that UFC star Conor McGregor has agreed his terms for a boxing rules super-fight with Floyd Mayweather.
UFC president Dana White confirmed to ESPN: "Conor and I have agreed on a deal."
However, before you get too excited about the prospect of unbeaten boxer Mayweather absolutely, definitely beating McGregor, who is not a boxer, in a boxing match, hold your horses right there.
Because, firstly, “a bunch of lawyers” are looking over the agreement first, and then they have to agree terms when they meet with Mayweather’s advisor Al Hayman, and Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, later this week.
It’s believed that McGregor will take $75m (£58m), while Mayweather will be offered $100m (£77m), in line with the purse Mayweather earned for beating Manny Pacquiao – who is one of the greatest boxers of all time, and who, let’s remind ourselves, was beaten by Mayweather. So let’s repeat, a brilliant boxer with many years’ experience could not beat Floyd Mayweather, and now a man who is not a boxer is going to try to fight him.
White added "It's either going to happen this year or it's never going to happen at all,"
Who do you think will win? We’ve given it a lot of thought and – we think, maybe – it just might be Mayweather.
