8 sequels you didn't even know were coming

8 sequels you didn't even know were coming

13 August 2014

Hollywood law states that every film must have a sequel. Even that short video you made of your cat attacking a frog is getting a big budget follow up next year starring Channing Tatum.

But while you might be aware of the more publicised sequels on the way (hello Star Wars 7), there are plenty that you might be less familiar with...

CHECK OUT FORTHCOMING SEQUELS THAT YOU SHOULD BE EXCITED ABOUT

Jarhead 2: Field of Fire

A rather strange one here that has well and truly crept up on us all, this sequel to Sam Mendes' war drama Jarhead, is making a direct trip to DVD, after remaining completely under the radar throughout its production. And what exactly does it have in common with the Jake Gyllenhaal movie, you ask? Well, as far as we can tell, both films are about marines and both contain a lot of sand. We imagine there'll be a lot more firepower in this one. If you're strangely intrigued then you can see the trailer here.

Release date: September 8 (on DVD and Blu-ray)

Hot Tub Time Machine 2

Ridiculed pre-release, this high-concept comedy became a surprise hit upon release in 2010 and even garnered some decent reviews. The sequel brings back the leads with one conspicuous absence: John Cusack, who's been replaced with Adam Scott. This time, they're going into the future and, if the trailer is anything to go by, some attempt at hilarity will hopefully ensue.

Release date: December 26

The Woman in Black: Angel of Death

After Daniel Radcliffe's Hammer Horror became a surprise box office smash, the rules of the genre practically dictated that a sequel would be on the way. This time, we're following a teacher who evacuates a group of children during WWII to, you guessed it, Eel Marsh House. It comes from Misfits director Tom Harper, which bodes well, and although none of the cast are returning, newbies include War Horse's Jeremy Irvine and Harry Potter's Helen McCrory.

Release date: February 13, 2015

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny

After the breakout success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon back in 2000, period martial arts films became mainstream for a while with Hero, Fearless and House of Flying Daggers all doing big business. It's then rather strange that it's taken so long for a sequel to happen, knowing Hollywood and all. But one is definitely on the way and we know that star Michelle Yeoh will be returning but director Ang Lee won't and the plot will take place 20 years after the first film.

Release date: 2015

Jingle All The Way 2

Now before you get too excited about this one, and don't deny it because we can see you shaking, Arnie won't be returning for this follow-up. Yeah, we took it badly as well. Instead, he'll be replaced with Larry the Cable Guy, the comedian you probably remember from starring in Tooth Fairy 2, right? This straight to DVD family comedy will be set at Christmas and, bizarrely, comes from WWE Studios as it stars wrestler Santino Marella. They're also working on The Marine 4 and 12 Rounds 2. Really.

Cars 3

Even though Cars was one of the most underwhelming Pixar films of recent memory, it was a merchandising dream, which led to Cars 2, the sequel that no one really asked for. It was a critical disappointment but a global box office hit leading to, and you can see where this is going, Cars 3. It was announced earlier this year by Pixar, who are also planning a slightly more exciting sequel to The Incredibles. It will be taking place on California's Route 99 in case your nephews are interested.

Chronicle 2

Arriving in the middle of the found footage craze, Chronicle was an ambitious and intermittently successful take on the subgenre which managed to turn a $12 million budget into a $126 million gross. The sequel has been slightly hard to lock down with a pitch from original scriptwriter Max Landis rejected for being too dark. Since then, Fox has hired Jack Stanley to come up with with something different. Stanley's only project to date is Sweetheart, a female assassin comedy, that's also in pre-production.

We're The Millers 2

No one expected much from this. It was a summer comedy last year with Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston posing as a family and hijinks then following soon after. But it became a big hit, grossing $269 million worldwide, and an inevitable sequel was put into development. All we know so far is that it's being written by Adam Sztykiel, best known for scripting the Robert Downey Jr comedy Due Date. The success of the first hinged largely on the cast so we expect they will be signed up pretty swiftly.
