10 greatest goalkeeping goals

When the big man attacks

10 greatest goalkeeping goals

Sometimes, it needs the big man at the back to show the lazy strikers how it's done. When goalkeepers attack: here's a list of the best.

Paul Robinson vs Watford

With Spurs already leading 1-0 against Watford in a match in 2007, well-known big kicker Robinson decided to get in on the action and produced a monster of a kick from deep in his own half, lobbing his England counterpart Ben Foster in the process. Oh the shame.

Peter Schmeichel vs Rotor Volgograd

No goalkeeper scoring list would be complete without the 'Big Dane'. His last minute runs into the box for corners are infamous, even coming close to scoring in Manchester United's dramatic 1999 Champions League win. Here we see him produce a header any centre forward would be proud of against Russian minnows Rotor Volgograd. Aside from the goal there are also a few very questionable haircuts on show.

Bartolome Barceló vs Mallorca B

Overhead kicks and goalkeepers are one of the strangest combinations in football, especially if they result in a goal. That's exactly what Barceló did for lower-league Spanish team, Alcudia, this season. With a moment of sublime technique even Zlatan Ibrahimović would be proud of, the 'keeper's powerful strike rescued a draw. Naturally his teammates thanked him with a 'pile on'.

José Luis Chilavert vs Argentina

Goalkeeper's scoring at club level is one thing, but Paraguayan powerhouse Chilavert took matters further by netting a number of them at International level. The three-time winner of the IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper award had a nifty habit for taking both free-kicks and penalties. In fact, he racked up a total of 62 goals in his professional career, with a record 8 coming for his country. Below is a free kick against South American rivals Argentina. We're not quite sure why he has a big bulldog on his shirt either.

Jens Lehmann vs Borussia Dortmund

Long before the controversial German stopper's Arsenal days he appeared between the sticks for Schalke. In 1997 during a typically fiery Bundesliga contest, Lehmann was on hand in the last minute of the game to head a net-bulging effort past the hapless Dortmund keeper.

Rogerio Ceni vs Corinthians

Brazilian goalkeeping veteran, Ceni has amassed over 1,000 appearances for long-term club Sao Paulo. On his way to doing so, he's also netted over 100 goals (almost as many as Emile Heskey managed). Not surprisingly, he holds the record for the most goals scored from the position of goalkeeper. This was his 100th.

Rene Higuita vs Nacional

Lionel Richie lookalike and international scorpion kick superstar Higuita was famed for his unorthodox (to say the least) goalkeeping antics. Consistently trying to dribble past opposition players from his own box his style reflected what you might see in a school playground. He did however score a few notable goals along the way, the following being a belter of a free kick.

Tim Howard vs Bolton

Camouflage kitted Howard scored a beauty back in 2012 when his huge clearance completely caught opposition keeper Adam Bogdan off guard. Howard called the goal 'cruel' after he suffered a similar fate for Manchester United reserves in 2005, hence his low key celebrations.

Ali Ahamada vs Stade Rennais

In typical dramatic fashion, Toulouse 'keeper Ahamada ventured forth to the opposition box for a late free-kick. The result? A backwards facing header that leaves you wondering just how exactly he directed it towards goal. The strike was a last minute winner for Toulouse, with Ahamada storming into the crowd to celebrate.

Jimmy Glass vs Plymouth Argyle

Goalscoring situations don't get much better than this; with Carlisle United needing a win on the last day of the 1999 season to avoid relegation from the English football league altogether, the last person they would've expected to produce a goal was their 'keeper. Step up Jimmy Glass, who calmly slotted the ball into the net in the last minute of the game. Glass only ever played three games for Carlisle but his name is firmly written into their history books.
