Wanted director reveals sequel details

While the rather brutal finale of Wanted suggested that a sequel might be a tough ask, rumours have persisted about a second chapter ever since the 2008 release.

With a worldwide gross of $341 million (£217 million) and a whole load of comic books to use as source material, it's easy to see why. The original writers were hired to pen the follow-up last year but since then word has been rather quiet on the project.

While doing press for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, director Timur Bekmambetov gave The Playlist an exclusive on the status of Wanted 2 and it sounds like it's going to be a cracker.

"Three weeks ago I came up with a great idea and I pitched this idea and everybody fell in love with it," he revealed. "And now I think we're on track. Right now the writer is working on the script, and it will be shocking."

He also confirmed that James McAvoy's character will be returning for more.

"It's a continuation of the story, with Wesley Gibson," he said. "Other people are dead, you know, we can't bring them back. The story is the same character, same mythology, but it's got a great twist."

What do you think it might be?
