Another day, another remake - and this time it's Maverick and the boys heading back to the big screen.

Given the enormous success of Jurassic World and Terminator: Genesys looking set to do good business too, perhaps we shouldn't be surprised, but it's now been confirmed that Top Gun 2 is officially underway.

The film has been in the works since 2010, but Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison has revealed that it's taking shape, with a script being written by Justin Marks, who has "a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy [have] turned into today."

It won't be a reboot, but a bona fide sequel, with the news that there will be a part for Tom Cruise, who played Pete Mitchell in the 1986 original.

"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick," said Ellison. "It is going to be Maverick playing Maverick. It is, I don’t think, what people are going to expect, and we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon."

Ellison also suggested to Collider that, plotwise, it would be concerned with the rise of drones, and the obsolescence of the fighter pilot in modern warfare. "When you look at the world of dogfighting, what's interesting about it is that it's not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out. This world has not been explored... it's drone technology, and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we're actually going to produce. It's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today."

As well as worrying about whether it'll be any good, fans will also be asking whether the soundtrack can possibly match the majesty of Danger Zone and Take My Breath Away - someone needs to get Kenny Loggins and Berlin on the phone pronto.
