Venom is coming out soon, wahey! Exciting film about a man who comes into contact with a scary alien thing that takes over his body and turns him into a gross monster, wahey! A film based on a Spider-Man villain that looks like Spider-Man even though Spider-Man is not present in this universe so nothing makes sense, wahey! Tom Hardy doing a weird old voice again, wahey!
No, but actually, Tom Hardy is doing a silly voice (if it ain’t broke), because he’s revealed how he tackled the titular toothy glob of goo in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He said:
“It’s a bit like Ren and Stimpy, you know? They have different sounds.
“I always saw Venom as sounding like a James Brown lounge lizard, and Eddie Brock is kind of… an everyday kind of guy, but he’s inherited this massive ego, this beast.”

He continued, touching on his motivations towards taking on the famous character:
“As far as Marvel characters, I have to say for me, Venom looks the coolest. That sounds a bit shallow! But I appreciate that he has a kind of brazen swagger and a zero foxtrot attitude.

“There’s a tragic clown element, which I find funny and is harmonious with some of the work that I like to do.
“There’s something funny about the circumstances of having a gift but it’s a tragic gift. It’s a superpower you don’t really want, but at the same time, you love it. It makes you feel special.”
Oh, and: “There’s that biting-off-heads issue, which is not what you would expect from, say, Captain America taking down a crook.”
That’s the kind of thing we’re looking forward to, here. More biting off of heads in comic book movies, please. Get those heads bitten off, sharpish.
Anyway, we’ll find out if we’re just getting a feature length, live-action Ren and Stimpy (actually that would be great) when it hits cinemas October 5.
