Who? Niki & The Dove
What’s the story? Electronic Swedish duo Malin Dahlström and Gustaf Karlöf, aka Niki & The Dove, were tipped for great things back in 2012 when they had a big, excellent hypey track in the form of DJ Ease My Mind. They even came fifth in that year's BBC Sound Of 2012 poll, but the breakthrough never really came, with debut album Instinct not really registering with the UK public. Hopefully, this will change given the strength of their new material from upcoming record Everybody's Heart is Broken Now. Last year's comeback track Play It On My Radio exhibited Robyn-esque wistfulness, but this track, So Much It Hurts, takes things up a level. It's nothing short of a Prince-style masterpiece; by turns funky, heartbreaking, retro and futuristic. Malin's vocals are pure Time After Time Cyndi Lauper and the chorus is huge. An unexpected delight.
