The ShortListen: Kyko (no. 262)

Tropical indie-pop from 19-year-old Londoner

The ShortListen: Kyko (no. 262)
29 February 2016

Who? Kyko

What’s the story? We're suckers for a bit of well-crafted indie pop, and this track from 19-year-old Scott Verrill - who performs under the moniker Kyko - fits the bill perfectly. It's astonishingly accomplished for such a youngster, with immaculate, tropical pop-tinged production underpinning a nicely written track. There are huge echoes of Saint Raymond, an artist who didn't quite get the attention he deserved when he released his debut record last year. In fact, the only thing that could scupper Kyko is just how perfect this track seems to be; a little more edge and grit might make the whole thing work even better. As criticism goes though, being too perfect is probably something he'll take.
