Texan woman has jaw surgery, now speaks like Mary Poppins

Until now, the only link between Mary Poppins and bewildering accents was Dick Van Dyke’s abominable attempt at being a cockney, which still remains a blot on the Diagnosis Murder man's otherwise sterling career.

Not anymore though, with news a US woman from Texas who underwent jaw surgery to correct an overbite woke up sounding like the famous nanny herself. Watch the video below for proof of that.

Diagnosed with foreign accent syndrome – still a thing – Lisa Alamia has now informed the media of her bizarre condition, telling KHOU 11 Texas it’s taken a bit of getting used to:

“People who have met me before [say] they’re shocked. People say ‘oh I love it’ but for me it’s a lot different. People who don’t know me, they’re like, 'Hey, where are you from?'

“’I’m from Rosenberg’. They’re like, 'Where is that?' I’m like, 'Right here in Rosenberg.' 'Oh, you’re from here? How do you talk like that?' So that’s where the whole story comes up.”

Caused by damage to the brain affecting a person's linguistic abilities, less than 100 people worldwide in the past century have been diagnosed with foreign accent syndrome, making this example pretty darned rare.

Though surely the most important thing for Alamia is that her jaw is now fixed. Although we are keen to know if she required any sugar with her medication.
