Everybody loves a buddy movie: two guys making fun of each other while solving problems. It’s a timeless winning formula. And now you can add War On Everyone, the new film by John Michael McDonagh, to the list of all-time greats.
The last two films by McDonagh, The Guard and Calvary, were masterpieces of storytelling packed with strange and wonderful characters. Both of those were set in Ireland, but War On Everyone sees him head to the more arid plains of New Mexico.
Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood, The Legend Of Tarzan) and Michael Peña (Ant-Man, The Martian) play a pair of cops fighting crime. Except crime fighting is pretty low down on their agenda. Instead, they’re two of the most corrupt cops on the force: they’ll blackmail anyone if it makes their job easier, or scores them some illicit cash, or indeed some illicit drugs. They find themselves out of their depth, though, when they encounter a man whose morals are even looser than their own, and who isn’t afraid to kill to get his way.
You can see War On Everyone for free thanks to ShortList Film Club, ahead of its UK release on 7 October.
There are a triple whammy of screening options across the country - all starting at 6.30pm on Wednesday 28 September - at the Odeon Glasgow, Odeon Manchester Printworks and London’s swanky May Fair Hotel.

As Content Director of Shortlist, Marc likes nothing more than to compile endless lists of an evening by candlelight. He started out life as a movie writer for numerous (now defunct) magazines and soon found himself online - editing a gaggle of gadget sites, including TechRadar, Digital Camera World and Tom's Guide UK. At Shortlist you'll find him mostly writing about movies and tech, so no change there then.
