It's one of the year's riskiest films (a dialogue-free thriller about a woman lost in space) but after record-breaking box office and serious Oscar buzz, Gravity has emerged as a worthy success.
And while the eye-popping special effects are certainly a contributing factor, the film wouldn't work quite so well without the commanding lead performance from Sandra Bullock.
