Sadiq Khan wants to cancel Donald Trump's state visit

Donald Trump – on the whole, outside of America at least – is not a popular man. His erratic tweeting, his Muslim travel ban (it’s not a ban, oh wait, yes it is), the fact he wants to singlehandedly destroy the earth via global warming: not...not that great a guy, really.

And now the list of people who are kind of sick of his shit has got longer, with London mayor Sadiq Khan calling the government to cancel a planned state visit by the American president.

Khan’s call comes after several critical tweets from Trump following the recent London Bridge terrorist attack.

Trump’s criticism came after he completely misunderstood (well, blow us down with surprise) a statement put out by Khan in the aftermath of the London Bridge attack which included the lines: “Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days. There’s no reason to be alarmed.” That is, Donnie, that people should not be alarmed by the presence of police – not that they shouldn’t be alarmed by a terrorist attack. They, generally, are considered to be fairly allowable causes of alarm generation.

Now Khan has told Channel 4 News that Trump is not only “wrong about many things” but that the visit should be cancelled altogether.

“I don’t think we should roll out the red carpet to the president of the USA in the circumstances where his policies go against everything we stand for,” he said.

“When you have a special relationship it is no different from when you have got a close mate. You stand with them in times of adversity but you call them out when they are wrong. There are many things about which Donald Trump is wrong.”

And speaking to BBC News, Khan said that some people “thrive on fuelling division”.

“That's not me, that's not the London I know, and we aren't going to allow anybody, whether it's Donald Trump or anybody else to divide our community,” he said.
