Any sci-fi fan to have racked up more than a couple of Star Trek series will undoubtedly have encountered the terrifying notion of a singularity. The idea scares us, before we remind ourselves that our computer crashes on a daily basis, at which point we stop ourselves reaching for the plug.
Two teaser trailers have emerged for Wally Pfister's directorial début Transcendence. The sci-fi follows Dr. Will Caster's (Johnny Depp) exploits to create the world's first singularity - a computer intelligence that can hold every element of human knowledge, understanding and emotion. A group of Luddite successors unwittingly aid Caster in his cause, allowing the boffin to achieve transcendence. Terror will inevitably ensue.
First up is Caster's TEDtalk-esque sermon on the potential of his machine, followed by a similarly ponderous speech from Morgan Freeman. Given Pfister's cinematography work for The Dark Knight trilogy and Inception, we're sure the visuals will be eye-popping as ever... shame we don't get to see any of them.
Transcendence is due for UK release 25 April 2014
