The movie adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘magnum opus’ novel series, The Dark Tower, is actually, finally happening, and we’ve got a proper trailer to pore over and everything.
It was a whole decade ago that J.J. Abrams was first linked to developing the project, which he pulled out of before the mantle was passed to Ron Howard in 2010. The film’s troubled production continued until 2015, when it was announced that Nikolaj Arcel would take over as director. Fans would have been forgiven for thinking the film had endured one too many dead ends to ever actually materialise, but then last year came the confirmation that Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey had signed up. We have lift-off.
The movie follows Roland Deschain (Elba), otherwise known as the last living member of the ‘Gunslingers’. His decidedly important mission is to protect the entire universe by saving the titular tower from destruction at the hands of The Man in Black, an evil sorcerer played by McConaughey. King’s iconic books blend fantasy, sci-fi, horror and western in an epic (and greedy) genre mishmash, while expanding on the complex multiverse that links together many of his other novels.
The trailer for The Dark Tower appeared after some gloriously nerdy staged Twitter beef between Elba and his on-screen nemesis.
And here it is:
