First trailer for Rocky spin-off Creed

First trailer for Rocky spin-off Creed

Michael B. Jordan was born to play a sport star.

Though we can only presume the 'B' stands for boxing rather than basketball as here comes the new trailer for Creed, the forthcoming Rocky-spin off featuring Sylvester Stallone.

The seventh in the franchise (that’s ‘VII’ for traditionalists) Jordan plays the son of Rocky's former foe-turned-friend Apollo Creed, last seen being pummelled to death by Ivan Drago. Living in the shadow of his dead father and determined to make it on his own, the youngster can’t catch a break so decides to ask none other than the Italian Stallion to train him.

Expect this to elevate from the clichés of most sports genre films, or indeed most Rocky films: having starred in the critically acclaimed Fruitvale Station and about to light up theatres as the fiery one in Marvel's new Fantastic Four reboot, Jordan is having a bit of a moment right now. What’s more, he’ll be reteaming with Fruitvale director Ryan Coogler for this one.

Still, from the looks of this first trailer, it seems we’ll still get to enjoy Sly’s impassioned speeches, street jogging scenes (he’s even wearing the grey hoodie at one point, ironically with what looks like a Jordan Jump logo) and of course a montage or two.

Even a Rocky spin-off needs a montage.

Creed lands in cinemas from 25 November
