The Jonestown massacre was one of America’s biggest tragedies, in which fanatical cult leader Jim Jones convinced more than 900 of his followers to drink cyanide-laced Kool-Aid. It’s an infamous story that has been told numerous times through documentaries and movies, but this latest four-parter aims to be the most in-depth of them all.

Co-produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonestown: Terror in the Jungle is based on the work of investigative journalist Jeff Guinn and uses real-life archival footage, dramatic recreations and the all-important new and exclusive interviews from those involved in the incident.

It won’t be an easy watch, due to its airing of real-life footage and horrendous audio clips of the actual massacre, but it’ll be a fascinating one all the same - the power that one man had over so many was almost unheard of. It’s almost never a good thing when that happens, is it? No need to mention any more names…

Here’s the first trailer:

And you can see an extended look at Jim Jones as a child, over at EW, here.

The doc will air on America’s SundanceTV on Saturday November 17 and conclude the following night. Presumably we’ll get it on Netflix or similar, a tad later, and we can’t wait.
