Design a Maze for the Shining Hotel

Design a Maze for the Shining Hotel

Design a Maze for the Shining Hotel
06 January 2015

Stephen King fans everywhere will surely be a-maze-d at this incredible opportunity.

The owners of The Stanley Hotel, in Estes Park in Colorado, are running a competition for one lucky person to design a new maze to be made in the hotel's grounds. It was, famously, the place that inspired King to write The Shining after he stayed there in 1974. The subsequent Stanley Kubrick movie, released in 1980, was filmed elsewhere, but it's still a crucial part of King history.

The maze, a tribute to that which appears heavily in the film, will consist of between 1,600 and 2,000 Alpine Currant hedge bushes, occupy 61,500 square feet on the front lawn of the hotel and the winner will have their name displayed on a placard. The contest to design it, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the current ownership, will run until January 31st; instructions and a template have been provided here.

The winning design will then be built immediately, and unveiled during the 3rd annual Stanley Film Festival on April 30th.

Just remember to not go out and try and complete it on a frosty winter's night. Just trust us on that one.
