Wherever you look, everyone’s got an opinion on the displaced people of Syria and their attempts to make it out of warzones and into Europe for a safer life for their family. Some opinions are good, some questionable, some straight up offensive.
However, what cannot be argued is that for all the talk of ‘swarms’ and ‘migrants’, by the very nature of the situation, these people are people.
So on the off chance you’re fed up with scouring through ‘migrant crisis’ headlines and hateful posts by ultra conservatives who probably believe the earth is flat, one creative studio in Sydney and New York has create something rather special.
Agency has created a Google Chrome extension called Rehumanize, which replaces a plethora of negative words typically used to dehumanise nomadic families ("queue jumpers", "boat people", "illegals", migrants) with the word “human”. Not very hard, is it?
"It's easy to lose sight of their humanity," said a spokesman for the firm. "This simple Chrome extension replaces these words and brings in a little more dignity. Let's call them humans."
Agency first developed this application after being moved by the lifeless body of Aylan Kurdi, washed up after a failed crossing to Turkey from Syria. The hope behind this program is to challenge people to rethink how words can put an entirely soulless spin on a very human issue.
