This prequel to a terrible horror film has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and looks great
06 July 2017

Have you seen The Conjuring? It is a very OK film about some ghost hunters who have to deal with a possession in a spooky house. Again, it is very OK. However, at the beginning there’s a prologue that involves a scary doll called Annabelle – this part is scarier than the rest of the film. As such, they decided to produce a full-length spin-off all about the doll – it was called Annabelle, and was directed by John R. Leonetti, who you may recall as directing Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, AKA the very worst film ever produced on this planet. By all accounts, it was not very good. 29% on Rotten Tomatoes not very good.

Still, it did big guns at the box office, so a prequel was greenlit. Of course, the prequel to a spin-off has absolutely no right to be any good, but in this case they hired David F. Sandberg to direct it, who you may recall as directing Lights Out, AKA most definitely not the very worst film ever produced on this planet. In fact, Lights Out was extremely good, and altogether a frightfully good time – definitely worth watching if you like a good scare.

So David went ahead and made Annabelle: Creation, and somehow, somehow, it’s currently running with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. That means an overwhelmingly positive reception from the critics – no bad reviews, essentially. Here’s what they’re saying:

“Annabelle: Creation will be hard to top as the year's most inventive and scariest film.” Scott Menzel – We Live Entertainment

“Annabelle: Creation is the rare horror sequel that improves upon the original, featuring more engaging protagonists and a far less problematic ending.” Jim Vejvoda – IGN Movies

“With Annabelle: Creation, Sandberg successfully moves the James Wan-iverse forward with an unyielding sense of glee, and I think he's done something very special with his latest film.” Heather Wixson – Daily Dead

“Annabelle: Creation should be seen late at night, in the dark.” Staci Layne Wilson – Dread Central

So yeah, I guess we should all go and see this now. We should all see the prequel to a bad film. Hey, sometimes this kind of thing happens, like when Freddy Vs. Jason was really good, for example – nobody expected that.

Shut up, it was.

Also, Annabelle: Creation isn’t the only upcoming spin-off in The Conjuring universe – we’ve also got The Nun. Did you see The Conjuring 2? It was a bit better than The Conjuring, but it was still, as before, very OK. In that film, the worst, least-scary character is a really shit nun wearing a dime store Halloween mask. Anyway they’re making a spin-off of that and it’s going to be fucking crap.

Still, Annabelle: Creation though, eh? 100%!
