Netflix release first trailer for 'Altered Carbon' - the show that could become their next smash hit

Netflix are pumping out so much original programming these days that it can be hard to keep up with it all.

Long gone are the days where House of Cards and Orange is the New Black were all you had to worry about - from Stranger Things to Dark, Better Call Saul to Ozark, it’s getting to the point where we’ll never be able to leave our sofas again. Oh no, what a shame.

Because there’s so much out there, it’s now rarer to have one single show that everyone is watching, but it looks like Altered Carbon could become one of those.

Based on Richard K. Morgan’s cyberpunk thriller novel, the driving force behind the story is that, in this dystopian future, people’s consciousness can be transferred between bodies, and PsychaSec are a huge company selling this privilege to only the most exclusive clients.

This throws up questions about the meaning of death - can it even exist if all that’s dying is your human sleeve?

Netflix have just released the first trailer for the show - which stars House of Cards’ Joel Kinnaman - and announced that it will be released on 2 February next year.

Kinnaman will star as Takeshi Kovacs, a soldier who has just been reincarnated into a new body. What the premise of the show might mean, of course, is that the main character is played by a number of different actors as the seasons progress, an interesting idea unlike much of what we’ve seen before.

Shutter Island and Terminator Genisys’ Laeta Kalogridis is at the helm of the show, and she told Entertainment Weekly

“The complexity of the story requires — as noir often does — to make something that’s an extremely twisty murder mystery, but it also had to be hard-R tonally, and a hard-R sci-fi movie usually is something like Logan, for example, where you’re building out a piece of a franchise.”

The first episode is directed by Miguel Sapochnik - a name Game of Thrones fans may recognise. He is famous for having directed some of the show’s best episodes, including ‘Hardhome’, ‘The Battle of the Bastards’, and ‘The Winds of Winter’.

If Altered Carbon is anything close to as good as these episodes then we’re in for one hell of a treat.
