11 must-see trailers from this year's E3
14 June 2017

With the press conferences now out of the way, it’s time to reflect on the abundance of all-new game trailers that E3 has unleashed upon the internet.

Here are our favourites.

Metroid Prime 4

Can you really call a dramatic build-up to a static title screen a trailer? Possibly not, but just knowing that Metroid Prime 4  – a Nintendo franchise that has been MIA for so long now that Twitter accounts have been dedicated to its absence – is in development for the Nintendo Switch was enough to make it a show-stealing announcement for a lot of people.

Out: TBA

Anthem

BioWare’s next big game is Anthem, a staggeringly-ambitious, shared-world action-RPG, where you and your mates zoom around in pimped out mech suits, picking off monsters and taking missions as you go. The game was also shown running on the 4K monster that is the newly unveiled Xbox One X, so it looked absolutely incredible.

Out: 2018

Spider-Man

Sony closed their press conference with an extended gameplay trailer for Marvel’s all new Spider-Man game. The Web Slinger has starred in plenty of video games over the years, but it’s Spider-Man 2, from way back in the PS2 era, that most people regard as his finest outing. That game perfectly captured the thrill of swinging across Manhattan. Could developer Insomniac – who, judging by the combat, seem have learned a thing or two from the masterful Arkham games – finally topple it? Don’t bet against it.

Out: 2018

Forza Motorsport 7

Sure, the Forza games are primarily aimed at Serious Car People, but you needn’t know the first thing about top speeds and twin-turbos to appreciate Forza Motorsport 7’s eye-wateringly gorgeous graphics. Planning on picking up a teraflop-loaded Xbox One X? This is the game to get if you want to see what Microsoft’s little monster can really do.

Out: October 3

Beyond Good and Evil 2

We’ve sort of known that a sequel to one of Ubisoft’s most popular games of all time is in the works for a while, but it was at this year’s E3 that Beyond Good and Evil 2 was officially unveiled to a room of very excited games journalists, and as it turns out, it’ll actually be a prequel to the 2003 original. If the finished product is anything like as exciting as its debut cinematic trailer then we’re in for a treat. A vast sci-fi word inhabited by cockney space monkeys and foul-mouthed pigs? Yep. Sold.

Out: TBA

 Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

In Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, players once again find themselves in an alternate 1960s where the Nazis rule the world. This time, war-scarred protagonist BJ Blazkowicz is back in America and looking to assemble a resistance movement that can get rid of them for good. The attention-grabbing first trailer was one of the highlights of the show, a near 10-minute mixture of gameplay footage, slick cutscenes and even a live action parody ad.

Out: October 27

Super Mario Odyssey

The portly plumber who goes through an alarming amount of wild mushrooms is back, and this time his famous red cap can possess dinosaurs. No, seriously. Every Mario game has its own unique hook, and in Odyssey it’s the magical hat. It’s abundantly clear that this game is a product of Nintendo at its wackiest, which is a very good thing. That said, we still can’t get used to seeing their timeless mascot stood next to life-sized humans. It’s just too weird.

Out: October 27

Shadow of the Colossus

Nobody saw this one coming. Not content with several HD remasters of PS2 classic Shadow of the Colossus, Sony has now announced that it has given the green-light to a ground-up remake of the game. The core gameplay will remain the same, but everything around it will be rebuilt in a lot more detail. Considering the scale and majesty of the original, this is very exciting news indeed. We’re just a bit sad at the prospect of taking down the awe-inspiring colossi again, especially in sparkly 4K. No boss battles in the history of gaming have left the player feeling so conflicted.

Out: 2018

Far Cry 5

The fictional American town of Hope County, Montana, sounds like quite a pleasant place – that is, until you find out it’s run by a fanatical doomsday cult who will spend the duration of your time playing the game trying to kill you. Luckily, you have friends with sniper rifles and a sharp-toothed canine companion named Boomer.

Out: February 27, 2018

Star Wars Battlefront II

Fun as it undoubtedly was, fans weren’t too chuffed that the 2015 reboot of the Star Wars Battlefront series lacked a single-player mode. EA listened, and the follow-up includes an original story that bridges the gap between Return Of The Jedi and The Force Awakens. It doesn’t take much to get people hyped about Star Wars, and Battlefront II’s E3 trailer certainly did that. Darth Maul, Yoda, panicky battle droids, intergalactic dogfights – it was all in there.

Out: November 17

God of War

All we really need to tell you about the new God of War trailer is that it features some heartwarming father/son bonding over the hack ‘n’ slashing of various mythological monsters, and that it ends with a bearded sea serpent telling Kratos he wants to be his friend. Everything the series is famous for – stupidly huge bosses, super satisfying combos, relentless gore – is present here, but there’s something a bit different about this game. We just want to see more.
