The next big Netflix must-watch hit is a GTA 6 timed-exclusive deep-dive

What might be our first real look at gameplay from Grand Theft Auto 6 is headed to the streamer first

Here’s a first — Grand Theft Auto 6, aka GTA 6, is getting an ‘Extended Look’ unveiling, and Netflix looks to be the platform of choice to view it on.

The streaming giant has partnered with GTA developers Rockstar to offer up the next big peek at the game, airing on August 27th, before anywhere else.

GTA 6 is already the most hotly anticipated…anything of all time, and it’s an unprecedented move to put preview-look access to the game behind Netflix’s subscriber wall — a press release accompanying the news explicitly says that it is ‘Netflix subscribers [getting] an extended look’, rather than free-tier members.

Not that you’ll have to wait too long if you’ve not signed up to Netflix, however. While Netflix gets first dibs at 3pm ET (8pm BST) on August 27th, the showcase will be available just a few hours later at 9pm (2am BST, August 28th) on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI website.

A Netflix first

Still, expect it to top the Netflix charts for some time to come following its release then, as GTA 6 isn’t scheduled to release until November 19th, and it’s a mighty sight more comfy watching something on your sofa than at a desk.

Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we’re honoured that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first,” says Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of Nonfiction Series.

“It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”

This’ll be feverishly awaited too — it’s been almost 13 years since the release of the last Grand Theft Auto (itself the biggest entertainment product of all time, amassing some $10 billion in revenue), and Rockstar has only drip fed two short trailers for this new game in all that time. Fans will be hoping the Netflix reveal will be the first time we get to see the actual gameplay in action, as all clips so far have been solely cutscenes or artfully-edited tasters of the in-game action.
