If you’re not from The North, then a little tip: I’d say you had best shut up about gravy. It something very precious to them, and with good reason too - great gravy is heavenly, bad gravy is hellish, in my experience. So if you’re planning on chucking out a nationwide advert extolling the virtues of proper gravy, and explicitly linking it to Northerners, then you had better get it right.
This is exactly what Holland’s Pies did this week - apart from the getting it ‘right’ part. Because they chucked up the following ad on their social media:
And, um, let’s just say it didn’t go down too well with our friends up top…
"Gravy" either make it thick or don't bother. May as well run the pie and chips through the washing machine.— Boozyburgerbellend (@boozyburgerbell) November 23, 2017
So yeah, not the greatest advertising campaign of all time. Holland’s have attempted to pull it back by hastily chucking a load of flour in their batch and banging up another ad, but it’s a little too late, I rate - the damage is done.
Yeah, they’re still not having it:
Thicker still. (It’s a fine art though). The north remembers.— Will Matthews RE (@Ubique_Will) November 23, 2017
You should be able to tip the jug over and it not spill out. That’s how thick.— Neil Winfield (@nwinny72) November 23, 2017
So what have we learned? DO NOT MESS WITH A NORTHERNER AND THEIR GRAVY, IT IS NOT WORTH IT.
