Only one active outfield footballer from FIFA '96 remains

You’re about to feel old. On the other hand, that next-gen console you just bought yourself is about to feel very young indeed.

Following the retirement of Brazil’s former national team goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni earlier this week, Twitter soon erupted in debate over which current players were still left who also featured on FIFA ‘96, that most classic of video games.

Gianluigi Buffon was one (and thanks to Twitter for telling us so), but there remains an outfield player who you might not have guessed:

francescos totti

"Am I really that old?

Francesco Totti

Not 40 until next year, Totti has been Roma’s maverick playmaker since 1992 and has remained a stalwart of football video games, transcending consoles and pixel counts, the golden early FIFA years and that period when Pro Evo was king - he even graced Pro Evolution Soccer 4's cover.

Back in 1996, Totti burst on the scene in style. Playing a pivotal role in Italy’s UEFA U21 Championship, he scored a goal in the final win against Spain and was later included in the all-time U21 dream team. And it’s some testament to the man’s longevity in the game that he’s still busting a gut on digital pitches and real ones today.

For one generation, there will always be something bittersweet about the retirement of footballing icons. So for now at least, let’s enjoy playing with Totti on FIFA '16 while we still can and pretend we aren't actually grown ups with proper jobs and things to worry about.

After all, we’d never play with Totti in FIFA's Legends team. Everyone knows that's cheating.
