Teacher gives pupil an award for "Most Likely To Be A Terrorist"

Hello, and welcome to another edition of Genuinely What On God’s Earth Were You Thinking?

Earlier this week a teacher at Anthony Aguirre Junior High in Texas held an awards ceremony, where she handed out “Most likely to...” certificates to her pupils. So far, so harmless – it’s a pretty set-in-stone tradition at schools, particularly in the US.

The only thing is, this rogue teacher decided to award 7th grader Lizeth Villanueva a certificate stating that she was “Most likely to become a terrorist”. This was on Tuesday – the day after the Manchester attack.

the award

The award in question

Lizeth said of the ceremony: “She said that some people might get offended, but she doesn’t really care about our feelings. She was laughing about it.”

Clearly, obviously, correctly, the teacher is now being disciplined, but how far that will go is not clear. Lizeth hopes that she’ll “get fired, at least, or something”.

The school district also had this to say:

"The Channelview ISD Administration would like to apologize for the insensitive and offensive fake mock awards that were given to students in a classroom. Channelview ISD would like to assure all students, parents and community members that these award statements and ideals are not representative of the district’s vision, mission and educational goals for our students.

"The teachers involved in this matter have been disciplined according to district policy and the incident is still under investigation."

I mean, bit late – the damage has been done, really. Ridiculous.
