It looks like that Mayweather v McGregor fight could be happening

1.jpg

As recent history has shown us, super fights have a tendency to fail come the big occasion. Think Lewis v Tyson, Batman v Superman and Mayweather v Pacquiao.

Billed as the fight of the century, Floyd Mayweather’s bout with fellow champion rival Manny Pacquiao was anything but. Eking out a win with an ultra-defensive performance against a competitor toiling with a torn rotator cuff, it was almost a non-contact sport.

Evidently, the criticism that still mars Mayweather's win might be why the boxer seems so keen on another all-star bout - this time with MMA icon Conor McGregor, who also announced self-imposed time away from the ring (octagon) recently.

Taking to Instagram, the 39-year-old has just teased fans of this unlikely contest once again with a fake promo poster featuring himself and McGregor.

It follows a similar faux billboard posted on social media by McGregor, who has only been too happy to tease the contest himself.

Not only that, Mayweather has even visited legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach (who also coached Pacquiao) to ask if he’d consider giving McGregor a crash course in the art of boxing. A task Roach felt was a thankless one:

"Conor McGregor seems like a tough guy and all that but being a tough guy doesn't really help you in boxing," the trainer said.

"But I do know that he's trained at Wild Card West which is one of my gyms on the west side and he's sparring with a couple of my professional fighters over there and I hear he's not doing that well with my professionals.”

"Mayweather is the best boxer in the world and I think he would absolutely not even lose a round against a guy with Conor's experience. I mean, he looks like an okay boxer, he's a very good MMA fighter but the thing is this is boxing and he's kind of a beginner at boxing. It probably would take me almost three years to get him ready for a fight against a guy like Mayweather."

How much of Roach's advice McGregor takes on board remains to be seen, though the fact he's currently sparring with professional boxers leads us to believe he might just go ahead and take the fight anyway. To Mayweather, it'll seem like, well, easy money.

One thing's for sure – if these two notorious chatterboxes were ever to go toe-to-toe, we’d be equally as happy just getting a press conference.
