Swear words, as our parents never tired of reminding us, might not be big or clever, but sometimes, in extremely unfortunate surroundings – say, trying to fend off a pack of lions for instance – only a measured and surreptitious ‘oh sh*t’ will do.
There’s something comforting – and comedic - about meeting your inevitably messy demise with an outpouring of rum Anglo Saxon invective. Something that graphic designer Safwat Saleem and his mysterious partner James obviously agree with.
Their series of images, imaginatively titled Oh Expletive, are not only ribald expressions of man’s helplessness in the face of impending destruction, they are incredibly poignant to boot. That they’re also aesthetically pleasing just gives us another reason to bow down in the face of their power.
