After 23 years, appearances in over 50 titles and amassing a franchise worth $1 billion, the fastest hedgehog in the world is getting his own film.
Word comes from Hollywood Reporter that Sony Pictures and producer Neal Moritz (Fast & Furious, 21/22 Jump Street) are giving Sonic his first big screen role in a CGI/live-action hybrid feature film.
The project will be created with Japan-based production company Marza Animation Planet, while improve comedy veterans Evan Susser and Van Robichaux will handle the script.
While details are yet to emerge as to whether the story will follow any of Sonic's previous TV, comic or video game adventures, the studio has suggested that Dr "Eggman" Robotnic will appear (and we'd bet our video game collection on the inclusion of Tails).
One thing's for sure - it's going to be better than the Super Mario Bros. film. Right?
