Philip Roth's Indignation Heads To The Big Screen

We can’t imagine there’ll be much indignation at the news of Phillip Roth’s titular 2008 novel getting a cinematic adaption…

We've not seen many Roth films adapted for the screen and we can't think of a better pair of hands to look after this project. A long-time collaborator with Ang Lee, and a former head of Focus Features where he worked tirelessly to bring indie films to the masses, Schamus is someone who should be able to convey the weighty subject matter of the book.

For those not familiar with the novel, it certainly has all the ingredients for an emotionally-tinged watch: set one year into the start of the Korean War, the New Jersey son of a kosher butcher narrates his experiences of being thrust into a conservative college where he’s forced to contend with sexual repression, anti-Semitism and harsh rule.

And it’s not the only Roth novel you can look forward to on the big screen either; director Barry Levinson's take on The Humbling, starring Al Pacino and Greta Gerwig, is set for a release next year.

Roth fans might be pinching themselves right now.
